No. 2 · Reinventing the UniversityWhy higher education must become a lifelong, community-integrated learning ecosystem, and how to get there
Summary: AI is changing what’s worth learning, climate change demands practical skills that have largely been lost, the college-age population is shrinking in much of the world, and trust in higher education is falling. Drawing on a career as a professor, dean, founder of Duke Corporate Education, and negotiator of Duke Kunshan University, this paper sets out five principles for reinventing the university. Each is illustrated by an institution already doing it: Waterloo’s co-op model, Belmont’s new ventures, Arizona State and Georgia Tech at scale, and Unity Environmental University. The common purpose is giving people agency in a world that keeps changing.
